Blacktop Mojo’s Self-Titled, released August 13th, 2021, is my first experience with the band. I have seen their name tossed around by friends, but this is my first listen. I sat down and enjoyed Self-Titled from start to finish. It’s good music to relax to yet also something I would have a fun listening to live at a show. Blacktop Mojo’s Self-Titled features clear vocals, easy beats, and relatable lyrics. It has a variety of tempos, taking the listener on a journey rather than standing still in one place.
The intro to the album immediately made me smile, starting off with spoken word to set the tone. Then, the music started. It was love at first listen. Favorite tracks for me include Wicked Woman, Bed Tundy and Do It For The Money.
Wicked Woman is the first track on the album. It’s an easy listen but that doesn’t mean boring. I could easily see myself enjoying this played live. I wouldn’t skip it if it came up on shuffle. That says a lot with my short attention span. I particularly liked the vibe of this song because it reminded me of something we all miss during the pandemic, live music, and my favorite bars.
Bed Tundy comes next. It has a chilling start, immediately making me think of Fall and Halloween. The guitars sound almost like saws at first, then the vocals start making it a completely different song but in a good way. It’s a fun listen and one that held my attention. I usually multitask when I listen to music, writing, talking to friends, working, but not this one. There were a lot of layers to take in.
Do It For the Money is later in the album, after a few slower songs. It starts with a brief female vocal and then immediately goes heavy. I enjoyed the bassline and unexpected awesome guitar solo a minute or so into the song.
Overall, Blacktop Mojo’s Self-Titled is definitely worth your time. It is true to itself and consistent. There’s a variety to the tracks and I’m confident everyone can find a favorite song or two with this album.
