Finland’s hard rock act Santa Cruz is set to release The Return of the Kings on 8/26 via M-theory Audio Records. The Return of the Kings was recorded originally as a one-man project by frontman Archie Cruz throughout 2020 and 2021, Cruz gained inspiration from the rowdy Los Angeles Rock revival to enact the live setting. Cruz soon brought in guitarist Jerry Jade, bassist Tommy Bradley and drummer Randy McDemian to pay tribute to Sunset Strip.
The album’s eleven tracks combine the anthemic choruses, chunky riffs and raw energy and attitude of the scene.
The raging “Here Comes the Revolution” opens proceedings with ear-splintering riffs and a fist- pumping chorus as a serious statement of intent. The album doesn’t hold back from letting itself go with “Take Me to America,” which is a tribute to the land of opportunity with further examples of sizzling guitar work between Cruz and Jade. The duo has great chemistry as they trade riffs with one another. The hook-laden choruses always prove a turning point throughout the release, alongside the raucous energy the album brings. “Under The Gun” is one such example. The track blends 1980s influenced sleaze rock with sharp riffs and an in-your-face attitude to keep those fists hanging in the air. The album takes a mini-break with slower songs like “Disarm” and “Standing My Ground.” The band’s songwriting remains strong with those notable influences coming from bands like Guns ‘N’ Roses and Motley Crue.
Santa Cruz sounds better when they play to their strengths, like the hard rock grooves of “Gunshot” and “Another Round.” The album wraps up with a softer side to the band. The pop-fused elements of “Would You Believe It” and “Stay” help maintain a balance to the album.
Overall, The Return of the Kings is a straight-up, album stacked full of anthemic rock songs and relatable lyrics to keep the regular rock fan in all of us feeling happy.
